The theory of evolution claims that
we came in this world randomly and naturally by evolving from previous
existence. Evolutionists do not believe we were built by a god or supernatural
designer. They believe this is unsound. Organisms then changed their traits in
order to survive and reproduce. To them,
our ancestors were nothing but mere bacteria that grew into more advanced
creatures. Darwin
assumed that organisms evolved in order to keep up with the changing of the
world. When Darwin traveled to South America, he saw various types of birds
that eat different things such as bugs, seeds, even hard shelled things that
required a bigger beak to break open. He
believed those birds with the bigger stronger beak are able to reproduce and
survive due to the forces of nature; they are considered the best organisms for
survival. After billions of years later,
new species arose with even more better parts, such as fins, and limbs, which
the alligators contain
Sometimes organisms cannot withstand the sudden change, so they do not survive
or reproduce, leading to extinction.
Since we are not extinct, we have successive genes. This is the true
meaning of survival of the fittest. A reason
why they believe in evolution is because almost every living creature contains
the same parts such as limbs, eyes, mouth amongst others. We may not look like
gorillas, but it takes billions of years to evolve. A second example is our genes.
Although this happens randomly, these are complex processes. The most life
saving parts developed in order for these animals to survive and reproduce. After
intensive experiments, a scientist results are due to one Chimpanzee having 24
chromosomes and humans having 22 normal chromosomes, with one additional big
chromosome. This process is called random mutation. The process is so complex that not every
being that is born will not be the exact same. They will have different
features, whether it is slight such as a simple birthmark or something
malignant like cerebral palsy.
On the other
hand, the advocates of teleology claim that we were designed by God or a supernatural
designer that wishes to lead us towards faith, hope and charity, not to mention
love for one another. Some intelligent power had to think, plan and design
us. They also believe that their faith
is too strong to ask for evidence. They believe this is against God. However, in order to prove the evolutionists
unsound, they had to come up with something.
One important reason why people believe in God or their own supernatural
designer is the earth’s gravity. Without it, we won’t be able to live. We will
fall off the earth. This is here for a
significant purpose, therefore it was designed. Scientists discovered the fact
that we are irreducibly complex. This
one piece of evidence can overcome all of the evidence of evolution put
together. A reason why is because
everything around us looks as if it was created, and so complex. For example,
the bacterium is so complex and complicated that only a true genius can
understand. If placed under the microscope, it looks like something that has parts,
such as a motor, a rotor and tail known as the flagella. This is indeed a
complex organism, therefore had to be planned and designed. According to Miller
in the Case “If you take one protein out of the 40 proteins in the bacteria,
you will now have the bubonic plague.” We are losing a protein that is
essential to our body and health. If you
look at our species, we are considered intelligent designers because we
continue creating necessities in order for us to survive. Humans built
transportation in order for us to travel faster. Humans built houses to shelter
and survive in. If you take one bolt out
of the train tracks, the train would either crash or go the wrong route. If you
take a brick out of the house, the house will fall apart. Another
plausible example is the eye. The way it has to work in order for us to use
it. It takes energy, muscles, and our
mind in order to use it. It serves a purpose for us, which is to see and reject
foreign objects. The
advocates of teleology believe this machinery was the work of a pure genius. Each part is in its order to act on its
function.
Evolutionists oppose of intelligent design theory because if
we were designed, then how come there are some mistakes within our body and
other species. We have accessory organs
that we don’t use such as the appendix. Whales have accessory organs too. They
have teeth that they cannot even use.”(Manson, 2002, 187). How about the giraffe’s vocal cord? How come
the cord is not long enough for them to be able to speak, or at least have a
full functioning heart? . They had found also found evidence,
the transitional fossil, which are fossils showing animals that are part fish
and land animal. Actually, “By the end of 1994, three
transitional species between whales and land dwelling Eocene mammals had been
discovered (Manson, 2002, 292). They also can breathe oxygen and hydrogen,
although their breathing span under water is 30 minutes, meaning they evolved
at one point. Organisms change over
time. Imagine 3 to 4 billion years
later. Individual organisms tend to
upgrade themselves depending on the environment at that moment.
On the other hand, the advocates of teleology believe the fossils
prove that there are diverse individual creatures that did not evolve from one another.
They do not see any continuity. These fossils are showing the variety of animals
that we contain. They believe there are a lot of gaps that need
to be filled, and that it doesn’t exhibit eventual change amongst organisms.
In closing, I have explained both positions extensively and
impartially. The outcome we have is if you put the theory of evolution and
teleology together, they would both be able to unravel this mystery. The theory
of evolution believes in complexity because of the billions of years that it
takes in order to evolve. In the case of teleology, we are complex as if built
like a machine. Although the theory of evolution has not been 100% provable,
and Advocates have not really shown us our Supernatural Designer, physically,
their argument fights a tough battle.
They both have points that really have us scratching our head, because
you are saying to both positions, “Wow, you are right.”
